Why We Need Families In Christian Fiction | guest post by Kellyn Roth

blog tour for Novelist In November

Hi friend!

Today we have a very special guest on the blog! The lovely Kellyn Roth has kindly written a post for the blog all about a topic near and dear to both of our hearts. Kellyn is sharing why we need families in Christian fiction and her top three reasons why she loves writing about families in her stories! I am so excited for you all to read what she has to say!

Kellyn is also one of the writers behind Novelists In November, as well as the founder of the company publishing this story the Wild Blue Wonder Press! Her story is called Tollemache House. It is set in Regency England, where a recently-married author must finish her next novel in a month or risk her family's livelihood. Desperate for inspiration, she travels to the countryside with her prickly sister-in-law where fights and floods make writing difficult. You can read this story in the Novelists In November anthology!

This is the fourth and final stop on the Novelists In November blog tour (at least on my blog)! Novelist In November is officially published!!! Congratulations to all the authors who wrote this book! I’m so so excited for you all! Thank you for having me be a part of this blog tour! This has been such a fun tour! If you want to see the rest of the blogs in this blog tour then make sure to check the end for the full tour list!

What I Love About Featuring Families in Christian Fiction

Hey folks! I’m Kellyn Roth, and today I’m sharing a guest post on Moriyah’s blog to celebrate the release of Novelists in November, the second anthology out with my indie publishing company, Wild Blue Wonder Press.

Today I’m here to talk about why Christian fiction—the primary genre featured in this collection and the primary genre I write—should feature amazing families … and why I love writing stories that do have families in then!

Though I believe that there is value in singleness and in people from all types of backgrounds, whether its our own or one we found along the way, God wants us to have families—tight-knit relationships that support and care for us no matter what. We are a social people who were simply built that way. From the beginning, God said He it was not good for man to be alone!

Now, I could talk about the importance of friendships and romantic relationships and siblings and found family all day. Our “church,” wherever and however we find it, is an important part of not only our lives, but specifically our spiritual lives. We are meant to have a community of believers to support us and edify us, as well as to provide us support of the emotional, physical, and most importantly, spiritual variety.

However, today I want to talk about families. For the purpose of this post, I mean the old-fashioned “parents and their kids” variety of family, though of course some families look different because we don’t live in a perfect world and death, abandonment, etc., happens.

As a writer of romance and women’s fiction, families are my bread and butter. *coughs* Okay, that sounds really weird, but basically, all my books are written about families. I mean, my three published series are literally “family sagas,” by definition. Here’s why I love writing them!

1: I love watching couples go beyond the “firsts.”

Beyond the first date and the first kiss, I love to watch a couple get married, have children, experience trials, and grow stronger together. Romance just isn’t romance for me if we don’t get to see at least a glimpse of the happy ending. Besides, it gives you more of an opportunity to expand upon a relationship that can sometimes become formulaic if set in the basic structure of your typical romance novel.

2: Writing bad families—and writing good families.

YES, both! I believe we need more stories with great families. Loving siblings, parents who aren’t dead or evil, couples who love each other and aren’t always going through some rough patch in their marriage. That said, I think we need the opposite! And a mix of the two! I think we need every kind of everything in stories written by Christians to encourage our readers that they are not alone in their struggles—and not wrong to aspire to something better.

3: I love children!

I kid you not, children are so much better than adults! If you are an adult, there is a decent chance I love every child on earth more than you. :P Okay, I’m kind of kidding, but I’ve been working in childcare since I was literally ten years old, I’ve had nieces and nephews since I was six, and now, most of my days center around working with kids in some way. Even badly-behaved children delight me. Sure, I do believe children ought to be tamed, and that a lot of people are just plain bad at doing so … but you know, as a woman without children of my own, that’s not really my place to ramble about. ;-)

But suffice to say, I love writing about children, too! I find them so charming and interesting, and I delight in showing different personalities and finding ways to avoid them being cliches.

With all this said, what do you enjoy about reading or writing books that feature families?
