The Selection by Kiera Cass | a bookish review

I read this series three years ago and fell in love with the characters. If you know me then you know my favorite part of stories is the characters. That is what pulls me into a story, and that is what sticks with me the longest.

I love the idea of the selection. It actually reminds me a bit of Esther’s story or Cinderella. There is an element of the Hunger Games with the dystopian world, castes, and the love triangle, and it is a televised competition. Still, it is a wonderful and original story that pulls you in, and I love it.

I love how much depth the characters have. Even the side characters have their own stories.

America is a strong character who knows who she is and what she wants. I like that she is willing to learn new things. She has depth and feels real. I also really relate to her. Her stubbornness, want for justice, and love for her family are all things I relate to (including stubbornness getting me into trouble, lol). The things she does and reacts to I can get annoyed with but then know that it is exactly how I would react if I was in her situation. As the books go on, I love seeing her grow and mature. She has amazing character development. I think I like her character more this second time reading through!

I love America and Maxon’s banter with each other. They are so cute together!

MAXON!!! Maxon is one of my favorite characters. He is just amazing and a complete cinnamon roll. (If you couldn’t tell, I’m very much #teammaxon)

*Cleanness: there are rebels in the book that can be violent and in one case they assaulted a girl who was severely traumatized. There are some more detailed kisses. Otherwise, this is a clean read, but this is something to look out for.
