Intro Writing

 Writing

Hello, there wonderful reader!

Welcome to Intro Writing! This is my first post on writing. I will be giving you an intro over what I will be sharing in writing and my personal writing testimony. Plus a look at my vision and my author's life.

Writers are storytellers. They are the people who create books which I love. Writers create worlds and stories and relationships. Writers have a special magic. A magic that comes through paper and ink.

I love stories! I love getting lost in books and discovering new worlds. So it's no wonder that I have found the joy of writing. Of creating my own worlds and stories. Of becoming a writer.

Writers Write

Writers are not writers if they do not write. This is the big thing I want to go after. Even if you are not a writer, there are things, wants, passions, and dreams that live inside of YOU. What are you doing with your talents?

Writers write. It is simple but true. If you want to be something, do it. You want to be an author then write. You want to be a dancer, dance. Singers must sing. Artists must create. Entrepreneurs must go and be business people, they have to go out there and make their dreams of being self-sufficient true. Inventors invent (they have to start making and trying out new things).

Here is the breakdown:

Your Dream Of What You Want To Be = Doing The Thing You Want To Be.

It is that simple. Yes, it can be daunting but it needs to be done. TAKE ACTION!

No More Excuses. No more saying you are not capable. No more procrastinating. No more waiting on the day you will be ready. Guess what, you will never really be ready if you wait. You will never get better at anything unless you try and you try again and you try again.

Start. Just start. “But what if I fail?” “What if I’m not good?” NO! DON’T LISTEN TO THAT VOICE. Yes, you might fail and yes your first time might not be good. But don’t let that voice control your life. Don’t let that negative nitpicking perfectionist voice keep you from perusing your dreams.

Think of Disney Pixar 's Luca, "Silenzio Bruno!”

If you never start, you never learn, and you never get better. I know from personal experience that it can be easy to fall into the trap of “I will just wait until I’m more talented and can better execute this.” I did this for the longest time with my writing. I loved stories and books and LOVED the idea of being a writer. But I kept telling myself that I was going to wait until I was older, or more experienced, or when I have the talent to do this book idea justice. I always talked myself out of doing my dreams.

One day I finally said enough and decided to WRITE! I released myself of my perfectionist’s voice (mostly) and decided to just write. For my fellow perfectionist, it is hard to tell that doubtful voice to stop. It is possible, and trust me when I say you will feel 1000% better not constantly doubting yourself! I still have that perfectionist inside of me, but its voice has lessened and I find myself free to write and do my dreams unburdened.

I knew I was never going to get better if I did not try. So I challenged myself. I started small. I went from not writing anything to starting small to six months later writing the first draft of my book (74,469 words) in 30 days! Seriously. This is no joke!

How? How did I go from not writing to writing over seventy-four thousand words? These are the secrets I am going to be sharing with you. Along with my own writing progress and possible sneak peeks, I want to share with you my success. I want to show you how I went from seamlessly zero writing experience to writing novels.*

*I have only written one novel but I am not limiting myself. I will write more novels and am currently in the brainstorming process for my second novel (sequel to novel 1)!

My Writing Story

In my last post, I wrote about my love of books and stories and where that came from. My writing story is the same.

After giving my life to Jesus and believing him as my Lord and Savior, I fell in love with stories. Reading and stories became, and is still, one of my very favorite things.

Writing stories now makes perfect sense to me, I love writing. But I wasn’t always this way. It actually took me many years before I was in a place where I could write without crying and feeling frustrated and angry.

You see, English was one of my worst subjects in grade school. What I struggled with was writing. Primarily on getting corrected.

When you are writing or doing something you love, especially when it is important to you, you pour out your soul into your work. You have these amazing ideas and talents to share with the world. It is both hard and humbling to be critiqued. This is your work, your passion, your heart all poured into your art, making it hard to be corrected.

It wasn’t until years later with lots of prayer, practice, humbling, and a heart change that I could write well without these feelings. I found that having others critique my work helped me become a better writer. Every time I wrote, I got better and better and I had less to be critiqued about.

Note: You want to have someone you trust to be critiquing your work (or anything you do). Make sure you know their intentions and that they want the very best for you. They want to see you grow and succeed. Surround yourself with these trusted people. Don’t just have anyone helping you with corrections. You want someone who wants your best, meaning they won’t give you bad advice and they will be honest and tell you when something is not working. They will tell you this not to be rude but to help and encourage you! They will make you a better (FILL IN THE BLANK)!

For me, my best critiquers are my parents. Shout out to my amazing parents, Tony and Abbi! Y'all are amazing and I am so thankful for you!

Honestly, it wasn’t until 2020 that I began to think I could actually be a writer. Then in 2021, I believed I was a writer and that it was truly possible. Last year (2021) was the year I wrote my first novel. It was incredible and so exciting. I cannot wait until the day I get to share my work with all of you!

For as long as I could remember, I have always had stories in my head. I was constantly making up stories of adventure and magic and casts of characters. It started as playing with my stuffed animals and Barbie dolls but then turned into an ongoing work of imagination. I was constantly thinking up new ideas and thinking about how I would do something different or better.

One day I heard someone say (i don’t remember who, there have been a few) to write the story you want to read. Basically, this means to write what excites you, what interests you. I have heard a lot of authors say to write what you know. Yes, I think that can be helpful but even better in my mind is to write what excites you, what makes you happy.

To me, this was really inspiring.

With my writing, I began small. I started writing out ideas and thinking up new stories. Outlining was one of my favorite things to do. I like coming up with a story and seeing how everything plays together. I love outlines and you will be seeing me talk about this a lot more!*

I didn’t have one way of coming up with stories. They were all in my head vying for my attention, springing from books and movies, or appearing in rabbit holes of research.

Something very freeing that my parents told me that greatly helped me in writing my first novel was to ‘write what I liked and not be bound by any rules’.

With their advice, It was like I had been freed! I could write what I wanted to write! I put myself in a creative restriction (a prison of creativity) and they helped free me and my story.

A little bit about my Novel. For years it had been floating in my mind. It wasn’t until 2020 I started writing down ideas. Then in 2021, I wrote the first outline, the detailed outline, and then in a spark of craziness, I decided to write my first ever novel in one month.**

I joined NaNoWriMo*** for their main challenge in November to write an entire book in 30 days. And guess what? I did it! I wrote the whole thing in 30 days! It was amazing!

*Yes, I am a planner if you were wondering. A planner is someone who plans and outlines things. Totally me!

**Yes it was that crazy. It was the most spontaneous not spontaneous thing I have ever done. I could not have done it without God by my side, my family's prayers and encouragement,  a healthy mindset, and taking care of my body.

***NaNoWriMo has two different writing programs. Their Main One  and their Young Writers Program for ages under 18.

Encouragement

My biggest encouragement is to not give up. DO NOT GIVE UP! Try try again. Don’t let the fear of failure dictate your life.

Take control of your life and your dreams. Stand up tall and be the author of your story. Your story, your life, is in your hands. What are you going to do with it?

The best advice I can give you is to write what you love! Write what excites you! Write what interests you! Do what brings you happiness and joy! Find that spark and never let go.

Above everything else, write for yourself. Write what makes you happy, what makes you proud. This is my best advice and is something I am constantly reminding myself to do.

The Point

Here I was going to give you some writing resources, but I have decided against it. Why?

Here is the reason why. There is no one “right” way to write. Each person is different and unique and as such, each writer is unique, and each writing process is unique.

Don’t be held back by any writing restrictions or rules. They are good things to always do (like good grammar, spelling, consistency in writing and voice, etc.,) but you shouldn’t be trapped in by a style. Something may work for me but not for you. Likewise, a writing style can be perfect for you but not for me.

I will be sharing with you my writing process, things that help me, and tips, but this is not for you to become me in my writing style. I want you to find what works for you. Some of the things I will write about may speak to you and help you, but I do not expect everything I do to work for you.

You are a unique person with your own personality, voice, process, and style. Find your voice. Find out what works for you. Experiment with ideas. Don’t be held back.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! DO NOT LIMIT YOURSELF TO WHAT YOU CAN OR CANNOT DO! YOU ARE A CREATIVE BEING FILLED WITH TALENT AND DREAMS AND GOALS.

Go forth and create!

Question Time!

I want to hear from you! What is your writing style? What stories do you like to create? If not writing, what is it that makes you excited? What is it you wish to do with your life? What are you most excited to learn from my Writing posts? I would love to chat!

Keep reading to hear about more Writing and other topics. My next Writing post will be on tackling belief! Writers write! You must believe you can do it. Believe that you are a writer and creative! Believe that this is your time to shine!

Tune in NEXT WEEK for “Intro Lifestyle”!
